NIXI Launches Internet Governance Internship Program

The program offers mentorship from global experts, a stipend, and hands-on exposure to global IG forums, aiming to nurture the next generation of digital policy leaders.

The National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) has unveiled its Internet Governance Internship and Capacity Building Scheme, aimed at fostering awareness and expertise in internet governance (IG) among Indian citizens. The program was launched by Shri S. Krishnan, Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), and Chairman of NIXI.

The initiative seeks to empower participants with the skills to engage in global internet governance forums alongside I-Star organizations like ICANN, ISOC, IEEE, and IETF. By collaborating with leading experts, the program aims to develop a talent pool equipped to address emerging internet governance challenges and contribute effectively to their resolution.

The scheme offers two internship tracks: a six-month program and a three-month program. Each intern will receive mentorship from experts affiliated with global organizations such as ICANN, APNIC, or APTLD, as well as experienced government officials and academic advisors. Interns will receive a monthly stipend of ₹20,000 and will be supported in conducting mandatory outreach programs.

Speaking at the launch, Shri S. Krishnan highlighted the importance of the initiative, stating, “We need individuals from diverse backgrounds to dedicate themselves to internet governance and address societal concerns. This scheme inspires young minds to grow and leverage their knowledge to create a fair and inclusive internet. It is an excellent opportunity for youth passionate about digital policy to gain global exposure and shape the future of internet governance.”

Shri Bhuvnesh Kumar, Additional Secretary, MeitY, underscored the internship’s potential to provide hands-on experience in global internet governance. “This program fosters practical understanding and valuable exposure, ensuring young talent is equipped to tackle global challenges and drive digital transformation,” he said.

Dr. Devesh Tyagi, CEO of NIXI, emphasized the program’s significance in empowering Indian citizens to contribute meaningfully to the global internet governance ecosystem. “By nurturing the next generation of internet governance experts, NIXI is paving the way for a more inclusive and accessible digital world,” he stated.
