The NorthCap University (NCU), in partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi and the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), has announced the launch of a BTech program in Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) with a specialization in Semiconductor Design and Technology. This initiative aligns with the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) to develop a skilled workforce for the country’s rapidly growing semiconductor industry, projected to reach $100 billion by 2030.
Bridging Academia and Industry The program integrates academic excellence with hands-on training to equip students with industry-relevant skills in semiconductor design, fabrication, and testing. Developed collaboratively by NCU and IIT Mandi, the curriculum blends theoretical knowledge with practical applications, ensuring graduates are well-prepared for the evolving semiconductor landscape.
A distinguishing feature of this program is its six intensive training modules, spanning six semesters, conducted at IIT Mandi’s state-of-the-art semiconductor laboratories. These modules provide hands-on experience in VLSI design, chip fabrication, and semiconductor testing. The curriculum follows a hybrid learning approach, with IIT Mandi faculty leading specialized courses, while NSDC facilitates industry internships, skill development funding, and career placement opportunities.
Strategic Collaboration for a Stronger Semiconductor Ecosystem
The partnership between NCU, IIT Mandi, and NSDC represents a pioneering effort to strengthen India's semiconductor sector. By integrating academic rigor with industry-driven training and government-backed support, the program aims to create a robust talent pipeline essential for India's semiconductor self-reliance and global leadership.
Students graduating from the program will receive certifications from IIT Mandi, with transferable credits to NCU, enhancing their academic credentials and employability.
Leaders Speak on the Initiative Prof. Nupur Prakash, Vice-Chancellor of NCU, emphasized the program's impact, stating, "At The NorthCap University, we are dedicated to shaping the future of semiconductor education in India. This program is not just about acquiring technical expertise—it’s about empowering the next generation of engineers to drive India’s ambitions in semiconductor innovation and self-sufficiency."
Dr. Tushar Jain, Head of the Centre for Continuing Education at IIT Mandi, highlighted the initiative’s significance, noting, "This collaboration between IIT Mandi, NSDC, and The NorthCap University is a crucial step in addressing the industry’s growing demand for skilled professionals. By fostering innovation and collaboration, we are building a strong talent pool to support India’s semiconductor ecosystem."
Shri Ved Mani Tiwari, CEO of NSDC and MD of NSDC International, added, "The launch of this BTech program is a milestone in India’s semiconductor journey. This initiative aligns perfectly with the India Semiconductor Mission, enhancing employability and developing future leaders in the industry."
Addressing India’s Semiconductor Aspirations With India’s semiconductor market poised for exponential growth, this initiative is set to play a crucial role in fostering a skilled workforce. As global tech giants like Vedanta-Foxconn, Tata Electronics, Intel, Qualcomm, and Micron invest in India’s semiconductor ecosystem, the program will ensure that Indian talent is at the forefront of technological advancements and self-reliance.
