The Linux Foundation has announced the launch of LF India, a dedicated entity aimed at fostering open source development and adoption across critical technologies. Announced at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon India, LF India will focus on projects spanning cloud native, telecommunications, Edge/IoT, blockchain, security, and domain-specific AI technologies.
India is a rising hub for open source contributions, with nearly 200,000 developers actively participating in Linux Foundation-hosted projects. LF India aims to serve as a "sandbox for innovation," providing incubation and support for startups, enterprises, and intergovernmental organizations (IGOs). The initiative also includes training, meetups, and events tailored for Indian developers to expand their expertise and contribution to global open source projects.
Jim Zemlin, Executive Director of the Linux Foundation, highlighted the importance of the region’s rapid adoption of open technologies, noting, “LF India is an important milestone in expanding global awareness of open source. We’re excited to partner with government leaders, enterprises, and developers to drive innovation.”
India’s developer community, projected to become the world’s largest by 2028, is supported by robust digital public infrastructure built on open source technologies. LF India aims to channel this momentum into meaningful contributions to transformative technologies, enriching India’s growing deep-tech startup ecosystem.
Arpit Joshipura, Head of LF India, added, “LF India will focus on local innovation with global impact, building collaborative open source communities and creating opportunities for next-generation projects.”
The announcement coincides with the inaugural KubeCon + CloudNativeCon India, hosted in Delhi on December 11-12, 2024.
