Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw inaugurates India’s First Tempered Glass Manufacturing Facility by Optiemus
Optiemus Infracom, an electronics manufacturer based in India, is playing a key part in India’s drive for self-reliance in electronics by commissioning the first tempered glass manufacturing plant in India in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. The new facility — powered using Engineered by Corning™ technology from global materials science leader Corning Incorporated — was inaugurated today by Union Minister for Electronics & IT, Information & Broadcasting, and Railways, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw.
The effort is seen as a landmark under the ‘Make in India’ and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives targeting the reduction of import dependency and the establishment of a strong ecosystem for indigenous components within electronics.
Scaling from Domestic Demand to Global Supply
The facility is already operational with initial capital expenditure of ₹70 crore, a production capacity of 25 million units per year in Phase 1, and approximately 600 direct jobs. In Phase 2, Optiemus plans to scale up to 200 million units per year supported by a further ₹800 crore of capital expenditure and will create an estimated 4,500 direct jobs in the process — to serve both the domestic and global markets.
During his keynote address, Minister Vaishnaw remarked on India's speed in the evolution of electronics manufacturing:
“In the past 10 years, the Indian electronics industry has grown from 2 lakh crore rupees to nearly 11.5 lakh crore rupees... there is also good export growth, at around 3.5 lakh crore rupees. Optiemus’ glass facility represents one more step toward domestic value for mobile. An ecosystem is being developed. In the future, each separate component: glass, companies who make chips, and so will also be made in India.”
Tapping into a ₹20,000 Crore Domestic Market
The tempered glass market in India is estimated at over 500 million pieces annually, worth almost ₹20,000 crore. The global market exceeds USD 60 billion, and presents India with a good opportunity to enter the arena as a worldwide competitive exporter.
Ashok Kumar Gupta, Chairman, Optiemus Infracom Limited, said:
“India is one of the largest smartphone markets in the world, but tempered glass has always been imported. With this facility, we are aiming to provide every Indian consumer with high-quality, BIS-certified, made-in-India tempered glass. This is not just about import substitution – this is about developing world-class capabilities for global markets.”
Pankaj Mahindroo, Chairman, India Cellular & Electronics Association (ICEA), said:
"This is a very labour intensive segment and corresponds with India's strength in hard or challenging areas. It has massive potential for employment generation, MSME participation, and exports. India can become a global hub for mobile accessories manufacturing."
Advanced Manufacturing with Global Standards
The Noida facility has introduced world-class machinery and operational processes, ensuring the full-manufacturing lifecycle (scribing, shaping, chamfering, polishing, dual stage rinsing, chemical tempering, coating, printing and lamination). Each manufacturing step includes and conforms to a robust quality check, ensuring India has a standardized, strong product to deliver to domestic and worldwide consumers.
A Turning Point for India’s Electronics Ecosystem
The inauguration of this facility represents more than just a new plant—it signifies India’s transition towards a comprehensive electronics manufacturing ecosystem. By building capacity for high-demand components like tempered glass, India is not only reducing its dependence on imports but also enhancing its potential as a global exporter in the electronics value chain.
