The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur has announced the formation of a dedicated committee to address mental health concerns. The ten-member panel will include expert psychologists, legal and police professionals, educationists, counsellors, and alumni.

The primary goal of the committee is to assess the various factors, whether primary, secondary, or tertiary, that impact the mental health and emotional well-being of students, faculty, and staff on campus. It will also examine the challenges that hinder effective mental health support. These could include limited resources, administrative hurdles, and aspects of the academic environment, among others.

The committee has been tasked with reviewing existing mental health initiatives at the institute and recommending measures to enhance the support system further. Importantly, it will engage directly with different stakeholder groups within the IIT Kharagpur community to gather diverse perspectives and inputs.

Officials at IIT Kharagpur said the initiative reflects the institute’s ongoing commitment to fostering a safe, inclusive, and supportive atmosphere for all members of the campus. The formation of this committee is a proactive step to ensure that mental health concerns are identified and addressed in a structured and compassionate manner.

The committee is expected to complete its review and submit a detailed report with actionable recommendations within three months.
