IBM and Vodafone have unveiled a new cybersecurity initiative that aims to protect mobile users from future quantum-based cyber threats. The two companies are collaborating to enhance Vodafone Secure Net, a digital security service available in multiple European countries, by incorporating IBM’s Quantum Safe technology.
Quantum computing presents both opportunities and risks. On one hand, it has the potential to revolutionize industries by solving complex problems, from medical research to supply chain optimization. On the other, it could enable cybercriminals to break traditional encryption methods, putting sensitive data at risk.
Recognizing this potential threat, Vodafone and IBM are proactively integrating post-quantum cryptography standards into Vodafone Secure Net. The new proof of concept, being demonstrated at MWC25 in Barcelona, showcases how Vodafone plans to adopt new attack-resistant encryption across its networks and consumer services.
“Quantum computing will change the world, but it also poses new risks,” said Luke Ibbetson, Head of Research & Development at Vodafone. “Our collaboration with IBM ensures that we’re preparing for these challenges before they arise, giving our customers confidence in their digital security.”
IBM has been at the forefront of quantum-safe security, working on cryptographic standards that protect data against quantum-powered attacks. In 2024, IBM researchers helped develop two of the first NIST-approved post-quantum encryption algorithms, designed to withstand quantum cyber threats.
“Cybercriminals are already adopting ‘harvest now, decrypt later’ strategies, where they collect encrypted data today, intending to decrypt it once quantum computers become powerful enough,” said Lory Thorpe, Quantum Safe Industry Lead at IBM. “Our collaboration with Vodafone is crucial in ensuring that mobile security evolves ahead of the threat landscape.”
As part of their commitment to strengthening cybersecurity, Vodafone and IBM are also key members of the GSMA’s Post-Quantum Telco Network Task Force, an industry-wide initiative bringing together over 50 telecom companies to promote post-quantum security adoption.
While quantum threats remain in the future, Vodafone’s forward-thinking approach ensures its customers stay protected in an increasingly digital world. By incorporating IBM’s advanced cryptographic solutions, Vodafone is taking a leadership role in ensuring next-generation security for mobile users worldwide.
