Google Labels Official Government Apps on Play Store

Google has taken the initiative to label government apps on the Google Play Store properly. From now on government apps will appear with a badge which will display a message confirming that Google has verified the app’s affiliation with a government entity upon tapping.

Google has collaborated with various governments worldwide, to address this issue of fake apps. With this new feature, users will be able to identify legitimate government apps and avoid fraudulent ones. The labels are currently rolling out in dozens of countries covering more than 2000 apps. These countries include Australia, Canada, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom, Japan, South Korea, the United States, Brazil, Indonesia, India and Mexico.

How to identify government apps on Google Play Store?

In terms of identifying government apps on the Google Play Store, users can look for the new “Government” badge displayed below the app name.  The badge will reveal a message confirming that Google has verified the app upon tapping.

  • Click on an app name to view its description.
  • Look for the “Government” badge below the app name.
  • The badge will display a pop-up message confirming that the app is affiliated with a governmental entity upon tapping.
