It's hard to find imagery as excellent as this for any reason, but Studio Ghibli is an able enough exception (the legendary Japanese animation studio, anyway). But because of a rise in AI generated Ghibli style art, debates are being had on whether its authenticity or if it has a future. We shall see whether Ghibli art will be around, what its purpose is, how it is working, and what can be done to undo the impact of AI trends if they have already spoiled something in Ghibli art.
Will Ghibli Art Stay?
The essence of Studio Ghibli’s art is in its traditional hand drawn techniques, which stir up deep emotions and human connection. All elegant (Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke), painterly films with many details to see; films like My Neighbor Totoro even used Photoshop! The rise of AI generated Ghibli style images doesn’t change the fact that Studio Ghibli can’t be replaced by its original artistry. Co founder of Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki strongly opposed AI generated animation: “Writing an animation by Ai is like an insult to life itself.” His dedication to the traditional means guarantees that authentic Ghibli art will remain a symbol of craftsmanship and emotional storytelling. Just like many viral trends, the trend of AI generated Ghibli art might go out of fashion in time. However, if the trend fades away, it might remain, simply due to the conversations that it kicked off involving the future of AI, art, and copyright. These days, many people have to start thinking more seriously about the rules and the fairness of the use of AI in creative work. Coupled with this trend, people have also been forced to remember the beauty of traditional hand drawn art which could in turn translate to more appreciation of real artists work. As the process goes on, the lines between human and computers invade, and AI tools will not stop improving, or even surpassing famous art styles. However, these tools will not be fully accepted without the tools being used fairly and respectfully so that the rights of artists are protected.
How Does Ghibli ArtWork?
The traditional Ghibli art is made with meticulous hand drawn techniques and bright watercolors and acrylic. Here’s how it works:
Hand-Drawn Animation:
- In animating every frame, animators physically draw every movement to mimic a motion that would feel natural and expressive. It is a tedious process that gives a painterly appearance that you rarely see in modern digital animation.
Soft Color Palettes:
- Soft colors are used to give the Ghibli films a dreamlike quality and to immerse the viewers in these vivid worlds.
Attention to Detail:
- From the subtle facial expression to the illusionary landscape, every single part is made and told viscerally.
Minimal Use of Technology:
- Unlike most studios that rely on computer generated imagery (CGI), Studio Ghibli only uses less than 10 percent modern technology in its films.
- These elements can be mimicked well by AI produced Ghibli style images but do not reflect the emotional depth or imperfections present in real Ghibli art.
There have been many serious concerns about the misuse of Ghibli art through AI. One big issue is copyright, as most AI generated images do not have permissions to copy the unique style of Studio Ghibli. Artistic integrity is also a concern for people because AI art doesn’t have the emotion and depth of the works that humans create. So while the co-founder of Ghibli, Hayao Miyazaki, has even declared that he doesn’t think that AI can truly grasp the soul of animation. Data privacy is another major problem: to make these images, users have to upload their personal photos, which could be misused or stored without their knowledge. Similarly, some of the Ghibli style images artificially generated by AI were also used in deceptive or insensitive ways, for example, exhibiting sad historical events in cartoon style, which can give the impression that things of a serious nature are trivial and not true.
