Sequoia Capital is joining a funding round for Anthropic that aims to raise USD 25 billion. This investment would value the artificial intelligence startup at USD 350 billion. The Financial Times first reported the news on Sunday, 18 January 2026.

Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund, GIC, and the investment firm Coatue are leading the financing. Both GIC and Coatue plan to contribute USD 1.5 billion each. Sequoia Capital will join these investors, marking a change in its traditional strategy. Venture capital firms usually avoid backing direct competitors. Sequoia already holds stakes in OpenAI and Elon Musk’s xAI, which both compete with Anthropic.

The USD 25 billion total includes prior commitments. In late 2025, Microsoft and Nvidia pledged up to USD 15 billion for the company. Anthropic intends to use the capital to build more advanced AI systems and expand its technical infrastructure.

Anthropic reported significant financial growth throughout 2025. Its annualised revenue grew from USD 1 billion at the start of last year to USD 10 billion by December. This growth followed the success of its Claude chatbot and new tools for software engineers. The company also recently launched specialised AI tools for the healthcare and finance sectors.

The new USD 350 billion valuation is more than double the USD 170 billion valuation Anthropic reached four months ago. In September 2025, the company raised USD 13 billion in a Series F round. That round included investors such as Fidelity, ICONIQ, and Amazon.

Reports indicate that Anthropic is preparing for a potential initial public offering. The company has reportedly consulted with legal and financial advisors to begin the listing process. This move would place Anthropic alongside other major AI firms seeking public markets.

The funding round is expected to close in the coming weeks. While the figures remain subject to change, the deal represents one of the largest private investments in the technology sector.
