A new study by CyberMedia Research (CMR) reveals that nearly 67% of India’s Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are now digitally equipped, marking a significant shift in the country’s small business ecosystem. The findings point to growing adoption of both core digital tools, such as ERP, CRM, and cloud computing and more advanced technologies like AI, IoT, and data analytics.
The nationwide survey, which covered over 400 MSMEs across key sectors including IT, manufacturing, education, and retail, indicates that digital transformation is steadily taking root in the sector. Around 33% of MSMEs reported direct improvements in business growth and operational efficiency as a result of this digital readiness.
The study highlights that digital adoption is no longer a luxury but a necessity for MSMEs seeking to scale, remain competitive, and reach broader markets. Businesses are actively turning to digital advisory services to help them make sense of available technologies and apply them effectively.
What MSMEs are doing
A significant 62% of MSMEs are now turning to digital advisory platforms, particularly online communities, industry forums, and professional networks, for support. Platforms such as LinkedIn, X (formerly Twitter), and WhatsApp have become go-to spaces for peer learning and business updates.
Of the MSMEs surveyed:
-
43% reported proficiency in essential digital tools like ERP and cloud.
-
23% have progressed to adopt advanced technologies like AI and analytics.
-
62% actively seek guidance to further advance their digital strategies.
Challenges holding others back
Despite the upward trend, not all MSMEs are progressing at the same pace. The study found that:
-
84% of digitally hesitant MSMEs don’t clearly see the value of digital tools.
-
81% are worried about data security.
-
56% lack the technical skills to adopt or implement advanced digital solutions.
These hurdles continue to prevent a large section of small businesses from moving up the digital value chain.
Amid this scenario, Vi Business’s #ReadyForNext (RFN) program has emerged as a prominent digital advisory platform. Recognized by 57% of the MSMEs surveyed, the program was found to be the most trusted and widely used advisory service in the country. Over 80% of those using the RFN program reported improved digital capabilities, with users highlighting gains in decision-making, business connectivity, and workflow efficiency.
-
62% of RFN users reported stronger connectivity solutions.
-
33% cited revenue growth or increased market reach.
-
Another 33% noted operational gains through streamlined processes.
-
65% said they would recommend the platform to peers.
CMR’s survey was designed to provide statistically reliable insights with a 95% confidence level and a ±3% margin of error. The evaluation looked at the scale, service relevance, user experience, and impact of digital advisory platforms across India's diverse MSME landscape.
What’s next
The findings reinforce the need for affordable, accessible, and impactful digital advisory services. As the digital ecosystem matures, structured guidance will be key to ensuring no MSME is left behind in India’s tech-led growth journey.
CyberMedia Research’s latest report paints a hopeful yet realistic picture: MSMEs are indeed moving forward in their digital journeys, but targeted support will be critical to unlock the full potential of this transformation.
