How do you see India as a place for market surveillance?

We are optimistic about this year. In the last budget, government had allocated funds like the Nirbhaya fund for the safely of women. So, the discussions are underway though still not implemented but we will surely see a lot of infrastructure related projects for safety of city, schools.

We are witnessing many government school making it mandatory to put surveillance on the buses for safety of children. In my opinion, the year 2014 will witness a 30%-plus growth in network video market but some slackness in the government sector is expected due to 2014 general elections.

Can you give an example of the role of surveillance companies in business intelligence?

When people talk about surveillance, they only think about safety and monitoring. That is by far the main application but a lot is happening in the industry in terms of business intelligence. For example, Café Coffee Day is one of our biggest retail customers. They use surveillance for process monitoring to know if their employees behave in accordance with the right processes to serve the clients and focus on maintenance as needed.

This gives insight in terms of how the processes are followed. Apart from this, CafeCoffee Day can use it for other purposes as well. For example, if you have a retail outlet where 1000 customers came and only 200 cups of coffee were sold , then the missing intelligence can be gathered using surveillance. Similarly it can be used in a super store to maintain customer satisfaction. For example, there are 12 counters for billing out of which only 5 are open. Incase two counters get jammed with queue then one can open the other billing counter to enhance customer satisfaction.

What are the upcoming trends in surveillance ?

The first trend is the betterment of cameras that can be used in low light or no light. This is called a light finder technology. Last year, we launched this technology wherein our camera's can compensate for the lack of light by providing good quality footage.

We launched Thermal Camera which is based on the heat the object generates. This paves the way for identifying an object in total pitch darkness.

Therefore, a thermal camera can be put to use in industries like diamond manufacturing unit, Army and big manufacturer plants located on the outskirts where there is dearth of bright light. It can easily spot the intruders if any.

The other trend is edge analytics. It works on the lines of smartphones wherein an app can be installed according to one's need.

For example if you install the software on the camera to count people, it will do that. It's called Edge analytics. Earlier it used to be done in the software where you need to be connected to the camera, and software is in the server on the central disc, so it is very heavy on the server.

Here it is happening on the edge, you can install the app on the camera and then the camera is behaving like a full-fledged solution by itself, and you don't need the server storage; you have the camera with the SD card which has the software installed, it is a solution on its own. So this is picking up as a trend in edge analytics and you can do a lot of things like number plate recognition, baggage identification, etc.

We are all moving towards HD video surveillance cameras. VSAS is also another trend which we will see picking up in sometime.
