In an initiative for creating a diverse workforce in IT-BPO industry, Nasscom recently organized its 2-day annual diversity initiative, the Diversity and Inclusivity Summit 2010.
Nasscoms Diversity and Inclusivity Summit 2010 was aimed at providing women professionals from the industry a unique opportunity to network, gain insights into non-conventional growth ladders within organizations, and get training in skills and competencies that help progress their careers to leadership positions. Eminent speakers shared their insights on how a diverse, inclusive workforce makes organizations more innovative, agile and attuned to the needs of customers. Leaders from different walks of life addressed how IT-BPO companies can partner with government and other agencies to catalyze the development of 1.2 bn population as productive citizens.
During the summit, Nasscom also gave away awards to companies to celebrate best practices in gender inclusivity in the workplace and showcase the winning companies. According to Nasscom, the award honors companies that have implemented policies and practices for gender inclusivity and enabled women to contribute to the success of the enterprise at all levels in the organization. The winners for 2010 across categories include IBM India (Best IT Services and Products Company), IBM Daksh (Best BPO Company), Conjoin (Best emerging company), Kale (Best company with less than 1,000 employees) and Nokia (Most Innovative Program), etc.
The summit drew attention towards womens entrepreneurship in the industry. Sucharita Eashwar, senior director, Nasscom said, With the initiative, Nasscom aims to promote womans entrepreneurship and supplier diversity amongst companies and engage and partner with government at the state and national level to enable greater participation of diverse groups in the economy. We have formed 4 national level subgroups to define the contours of the particular diversity groups, create an ecosystem for their inclusivity, and take forward the agenda through activities across the country.
There has been a transformational shift in the focus of gender inclusivity, and Indian companies are increasingly viewing it as a business imperative, and not as a corporate social responsibility activity. As compared to 2005-06, when only 4 companies had formal defined policies for gender inclusivity now there are about 350 companies which have formal gender inclusivity policies.
