The tweet has set all social media platforms abuzz with discussions on the possible reasons for PM Narendra Modi to give up his accounts, as well as given rise to hashtags such as No Sir, No Modi No Twitter, and Modi Quits Social Media. PM Modi’s tweet alone has garnered over 98,000 replies, 48,000 retweets and 1,68,900 likes.

While some are requesting Narendra Modi to drop this idea, the rest are asking him to order his followers to abandon their social media accounts as well. “Respected Modi ji, Earnestly wish you would give this advise to the concerted army of trolls, who abuse-intimidate-badger-threaten others every second in you name! Sincere Regards, Citizens of India,” tweets Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala.

“Also, we know this your "Digital Detox" gimmick to divert attention from the Delhi Violence. This is all you know to do. One gimmick after another like Good governance day, Yoga Day and now Digital Detox day. If only this much effort you had put for Economy & society,” tweets another Congress leader Srivatsa.

However, several other netizens have also put forth their theories on the possible reasons for Narendra Modi to take this decision.

  1. Sunday happens to be International Women’s Day, so there is a chance women achievers will take over Narendra Modi’s social media accounts for one day.
  2. Narendra Modi could be upset over rumors and fake news being spread over social media, which helped in creating the riot situation in Delhi.
  3. The Prime Minister may indeed want to promote a Digital Detox Day, as he even advised students in Mann Ki Baath to take a break from social media once in a while.
  4. The opposition is of the view that this could just be a ‘gimmick’ to take the spotlight away from more serious problems in the country.
  5. Another theory suggests that he wants to give up Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube to promote Made in India social media apps.

That said, the actual reason for Narendra Modi to arrive at this decision can only be confirmed on 8 March 2020. Until then, feel free to comment below on what you as viewers think are the possible reasons for Modi quitting social media.

Update: Reason number one turns out to be true: "This Women's Day, I will give away my social media accounts to women whose life & work inspire us. This will help them ignite motivation in millions. Are you such a woman or do you know such inspiring women? Share such stories using #SheInpiresUs," this was just tweeted by PM Modi.
