Narendra Modi, in June 2023, met several IT giants during his visit to the United States of America. The visit prompted various large companies to promise investments into India. Micron was one such company that announced an investment of over $800 million toward a new $2.75 billion semiconductor assembly and test facility in India.

“There is a tremendous opportunity ahead for India in semiconductors. Vibrant Gujarat will also address the visionary ideas that are critical for India's growth as a semiconductor power. Today, I'm proud to represent Micron, one of the world's largest semiconductor companies and the leader in memory and storage. Micron's innovations have been at the heart of all computing systems for more than four decades. Memory is a key enabler of AI and Micron is a leading powerhouse in memory,” said Mehrotra.

Micron is already building a new assembly and test facility in Gujarat, which will enable assembly and test manufacturing for both DRAM and NAND products. The facility will be able to address demand from domestic and international markets. The project is expected to generate  5,000 new direct Micron jobs and 15,000 community jobs in India over several years to come. Micron said that it chose Gujarat as its preferred location primarily because of the state’s robust manufacturing infrastructure, favorable business environment, and the presence of a well-established talent pool within the SANAND Industrial Park, overseen by the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC).

Bhupendra Patel, Chief Minister of Gujarat, said: “Had a productive meeting with Mr. Sanjay Mehrotra, President & CEO of Micron Technologies, the US-based leading chip manufacturing company. Extended all support from the State Government for the company’s  semiconductor assembly and testing facility in Sanand in Gujarat. Sought cooperation to pave the way for the State and the Country to become a global hub for semiconductor manufacturing.”
