Mission Hollywood

New Update

Many of the Indian post-production studios/ href="http://dqindia.ciol.com/content/dqtop20_09/IndustryAnalyses/2009/109081309.asp">VFX

entities are going global by expanding their business into Hollywood in

the recent weeks. In some ways, this reflects what software services

vendors did more than a decade back. Many industry observers, in fact,

often try to draw parallels between the Indian animation/VFX sector and

the Indian software services segment. While they too like IT services

vendors embraced the offshore model in the beginning of the 2000s, the

trend to go onsite is catching up fast. One significant difference,

however, has been a matured domestic market for this

sector—thanks to the increasing sleekness of Bollywood, that

is a much developed segment in the last few years.

Reliance
Mediaworks
has recently

collaborated with the US-based In-Three to convert films and videos

into the 3D format, to cater to the growing demand for such movies

globally. This strategic alliance would address the  growing

demand of Hollywood studios for converting both new films shot in 2D as

well as older film released in cinemas and on home platforms into the

3D format. As per initial expectations, Mediaworks will be able to

cater 15-25 feature films projects per year and work on the first joint

title will commence in the beginning of 2010. While currently there are

2500 3D screens around the world in 2008, the number is expected to

rise to 7000 next year and 15,000 by 2013.

Even more noteworthy has been the initiative from href="http://dqindia.ciol.com/content/industrymarket/datastock/2004/104022401.asp">Visual
Computing Labs (VCL), the VFX

arm of href="http://dqindia.ciol.com/content/dqtop202k3/giants/103072501.asp">Tata

Elxsi, to set up a facility in

Santa Monica, Los Angeles designed for US-based film and TV production

companies. The facility is getting operational from December 7 and will

currently involve a 45 member team. VCL has roped in three VFX industry

veterans Joel Hynek, Tricia Ashford and Treva Blue to bolster their

operations--Joel will be the Senior VFX Supervisor, Tricia will head

the complete production and Treva  will head the trailers

segment of the facility.
