Ashwini Aggarwal has resigned as the executive director of the
Manufacturers' Association for Information Technology (MAIT), it is
reliably learnt by Dataquest. This comes as a surprise as he had taken
over just seven months back, in September 2010 to be precise. His
immediate predecessor, Vinnie Mehta, occupied the position for close to
twelve and half years.
It is not known what exactly prompted Aggarwal to put in his papers so
soon after taking up the responsibility, though some industry sources
suggest that some executive council members did not have a great
relationship with him.
The Executive Council of MAIT has representatives from most of the
large manufacturers operating in India, both Indian and foreign
companies.
Ashwini had a long stint at Hewlett-Packard India and worked for a
short while in Omnicom Media Group before taking over the position at
MAIT.
Set up in 1982, MAIT represents the interests of Indian IT
manufacturers. Though started before NASSCOM, it has not been as
influential as the software and services apex body, partially because
India has not developed much as a global manufacturing base.
