Though it missed the Top 20 cut this time, MBT is a software services company that has achieved significant growth and success by focusing only on the telecom vertical. It shares this quite unique attribute with i-flex, which focuses only on financial services. With i-flex making it to the Top 20 this time, it is perhaps time to take a second look at the multi-vertical plays of most of the others. Within telecom, MBT chose three practices for special attention in FY 2003-04-consulting practice, system integration and professional services. The focused horizontals included OSS/BSS, security, BI and new-generation technologies like VoIP, SMS gateways and location-based services. Client selection strategy: in Western Europe (mainly Germany and the UK) as well as in the US, MBT chose to work primarily with the large established operators, while in Asia-Pacific, the choice fell on greenfield service providers who were making heavy initial investments. A niggling worry was its dependence on British Telecom which hovered around the 75% mark, though with the strategic de-risking it might soon come down.
