Linux has come a long way since its evolution and its adoption among Indian

enterprises is on the rise. The three-city Red Hat INSIGHT seminar on "The

Price-Performance Advantage of Linux" deliberated on precisely this, with

Linux aficionados turning out in large numbers in Kolkata, Hyderabad, and

Chennai. The key people from Red Hat, Oracle, and Intel demonstrated how Linux

is a value-rich proposition for enterprises. Red Hat officials drove home the

point that Red Hat Linux offers the best price performance advantage in its

class and is ideally suited to run an array of mission critical applications,

database servers and whole lot of infrastructure critical solutions like mail,

web, print and file servers. Meanwhile Intel demonstrated how it has evolved as

a platform of choice for Linux.

The seminar also showcased the commitment of vendors like Oracle. For

instance, running Oracle applications on Linux yields the lowest TCOs, and Linux

offers key advantages for Oracles 9i database/application server and 11i

applications. But despite industry leaders embracing and supporting Linux in a

big way there is always an element of skepticism on the key question — whether

Linux is enterprise-ready. This was laid to rest by UTI Bank, which had deployed

Oracle Financials over Red Hat Linux.

UTI is the first bank to undertake such a huge Linux deployment and according

to UTI sources, Red Hat Linux has enabled them to operate in a cost effective

manner, besides emerging as a key element for managing its call centers, which

handle more than 7,000 calls a day. What stood out clearly at the end of the

seminar is that vendors like Red Hat have successfully countered the challenges

posed by proprietary solutions and hastened the overall adoption of Linux among

Indian enterprises.
