In light of the novel Coronavirus situation in India, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India, has decided to postpone JEE Mains 2020, CBSE, NIOS as well as University exams until 31 March 2020. The decision was announced by MHRD yesterday in a bid to prevent the virus from spreading further.

“Keeping in view the health concerns of Students, I directed CBSE and NIOS to postpone exams and evaluation till 31st March 2020. I request all students to follow the health advisory issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Affairs,” tweeted Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, Union Cabinet Minister for Human Resource Development.

“While maintenance of academic calendars and exam schedule is important, equally important is the safety and security of the students who are appearing in various examinations, as also that of their teachers and parents,” says the notification issued by MHRD.

MHRD arrived at this decision as, although the CBSE board had been issuing detailed instructions for the precautionary measures to be taken at various examination and evaluation centers, a large number of guardians and parents were accompanying their children to the examination centres. Furthermore, competitive examinations like JEE Mains 2020 required examinees to travel to other centers and in some cases even to other cities, which has to be avoided as per the advisory issued by the government.

Also, a large number of parents, teachers and students were anxious about the present situation and were expressing the same through social media platforms and emails to CBSE.

When will JEE Mains 2020 and other exams be held?

The notification from MHRD says that all exams, as well as all evaluations, will be scheduled after 31 March 2020. As far as the JEE Mains 2020 is concerned, since the exam may require travel by examinees to different towns and the dates may clash with rescheduled CBSE and other Board exams, JEE Mains must be rescheduled and the new date of JEE Mains will be announced on 31 March 2020 after re-assessment of the situation, adds the notification.
