Technologies of Thiruvananthapuram? They are not contestants for the next
version of the Indian Idol, but CIOs of Indian SMBs located in the smaller SEC B
and C cities. And yes, they were all attendees in the Dataquest seminars on The
Growing Enterprise: Perfect Synergy Conclave organized in association with HP,
SAP and Intel.
As evident, these seminars traveled across India,
particularly the upcountry locations including Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi,
Aurangabad, Vadodara, Mangalore, Bhopal and Bhubaneshwar. The exceptions were
Hyderabad and Chennai, though in these cities too the focus was firmly on the
growing galaxy of SMBs. And the congregation of CIOs of so many small and
mid-size companies, even in the relatively smaller towns, emphasized that IT has
indeed made substantial inroads into the psyche of India Inc.

CIOs from smaller cities had several questions on consolidation and virtualization |
The crucial issues that seemed to be the common concerns of
CIOs across all cities were storage and server consolidation as well as
virtualization. Industry experts from HP presented their views on how HP
StorageWorks solutions as well as an ILM strategy could help CIOs to increase
productivity and manage businesses better. The HP speakers in different cities
also spoke about how the OpenView platform can help CIOs plan and manage their
enterprise solutions better. The speakers from HP and SAP also emphasized how
the ERP solution from SAP could function best on an HP platform. This was
reiterated through presentation of case studies from IOCL and Ashok Leyland.
One concern many CIOs from the smaller cities came up with was the lack of after sales support from SIs |
One pertinent concern many of the CIOs from the smaller
cities came up with was the lack of after sales support from the SIs.
Participants in Mangalore were particularly vocal that even large SIs like CMC
have not been providing the requisite support once they have implemented the HP
solutions. However, the senior HP representatives present in different cities
including Avijit Basu, country manager-storage assured them that this would be
looked at with utmost importance. Technology wise, majority of the participating
enterprises informed that consolidation of backup and recovery from multiple
servers, consolidation and management of DAS attached to their servers and
compliance to regulatory requirements regarding their data storage and retention
were their biggest concern areas.
