Indian Space Research Organisation(ISRO) has introduced an online course on "Satellite Meteorology applications in weather and climate studies" under its prestigious institute Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS). The course is scheduled to commence from 7th August to 11th August 2023. The course will provide a comprehensive overview of satellite remote sensing concepts and the application of satellite-based meteorological products in weather and climate studies.

Formerly known as the Indian Photo-interpretation Institute (IPI), IIRS was founded in 1966. Since then, it has developed into a renowned institution that trains experts in remote sensing, geoinformatics, and GNSS technology for natural resources, environmental, and disaster management. By providing training programs for a variety of target groups, from recent graduates to policymakers and academics, IIRS, the first of its kind in South-East Asia, has been playing a crucial role in developing the user community's capability.

What are the topics covered in the IIRS ISRO course?

An in-depth overview of satellite remote sensing ideas for meteorological research will be provided in the upcoming online course "Satellite Meteorology Applications in Weather and Climate Studies," which also intends to raise awareness of the various satellite-based meteorological products that are currently available. The course will cover a variety of topics, including numerical weather prediction, operational weather services, fine-scale processes, synoptic-scale dynamics, climate change research, and more.

Some of the key highlights of the course will be

  • Understanding satellite meteorology fundamentals
  •  Analysis of meteorological satellite sensors and data products
  •  Applications of satellite data in monsoon season studies
  • Utilizing satellite data in Tropical Cyclone studies
  •  Satellite data's role in operational weather services
  •  Detection of trace gases and air quality assessment using satellite data

What are the benefits of the IIRS IRSO course?

One of the major benefits of this online course is that it is entirely free and all interested organizations, universities, departments, and institutes can register their nodal centers on IIRS’s website. Here, participants are required to register themselves through their respective nodal centers for the course.

Besides that, upon successful completion of the course with a minimum of 70% attendance candidates will be awarded with a course completion certificate.

IIRS an institutional body under ISRO is committed to empowering professionals with cutting-edge knowledge in satellite meteorology, contributing significantly to advancements in weather and climate studies. The course is an opportunity for individuals to enhance their knowledge and capabilities under the guidance of experts and scientists of the prestigious institute ISRO.

The registrations are open for the course and as there are a limited number of seats available for the course individuals are encouraged to send their applications as soon as possible.
