ISRO is offering a free online course called “Geodata Processing Using Python” for which interested students and professionals can enrol

ISRO, through its centre the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, is offering free online course that can be completed in 10 days. The course, called “Geodata Processing Using Python”, is scheduled to be held from 16 to 27 January 2023, and participants will be admitted to the course on a first come first serve basis. The program is being sponsored by the Indian Space Research Organisation, Department of Space, Government of India.

Those who successfully complete the course will also receive a certificate from ISRO provided they have 70 percent attendance and obtain 40 percent in the online examination. While the course is open to all interested students and professionals, they will have to be familiar with the basics of remote sensing and geographical information system, as well as possess basic knowledge of computer programming preferably in python.

What the ISRO Free Online Course Will Cover?

The course basically aims atheling participants derive insights from the vast amount of data that gets accumulated through satellite imagery and geospatial data. Some of the topics that will be covered was part of the course are as follows:

  • Overview of geographical information system and different geospatial data types.
  • Overview to Python programming.
  • Introduction to anaconda and Jupyter notebook.
  • Raster data processing, resampling and analysis.
  • Vector data processing and analysis.
  • Geo-spatial data visualization on web.
  • Familiarization to various open source geospatial data processing libraries such as GDAL, and Geopandas.

How the ISRO Free Online Course Will Help Participants?

The participants of the course should be able to do the following upon completion of the curriculum:

  • Write program in python to read, write and process different raster and vector formats.
  • Write program to visualize geospatial data in form of maps, or images.

Course study materials like lecture slides, video recorded lectures, open source software and handouts of demonstrations among others will be made available to the participants of the e-class platform.

Who can take the ISRO Free Online Course on Python?

The course is open to the following participants who will need to apply through their university or institute, and applications must be forwarded through the coordinators from respective centres:

  • Final year undergraduate or postgraduate students.
  • Technical or scientific staff of central or state government.
  • Faculty or researchers at from university or institutions.
  • Users receiving programmes under CEC-UGC or CIET networks can also participate.

Hardware Needed to take ISRO Free Online Course

The ISRO free online course can be run in a classroom provided the following hardware is available with the coordinators:

  • Desktop computer with web camera microphone and output speakers or laptop with microphone camera and output speaker.
  • Large display screen, projector or TV.

Those who wish to take the course, are advised to apply through the official website at the earliest. Participant applications that are approved by course coordinators will be able to take the course.
