ISRO has invited applications from interested participants for a free online course called ‘advances in monitoring and modelling of hydro-meteorological hazards using geospatial technology and process based models’. The course, which will be conducted from 5 to 9 December 2022, is being offered by the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), a unit of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

The organisation says that participants, upon the successful completion of the course, will be familiar with earth observation data and modellling approaches for monitoring and quantitative assessment of hydro-meteorological hazards. Participants can attend the course either through the IIRS Edusat platform or also the institute’s official YouTube channel.

What the ISRO Free Online Course Will Cover?

The course basically aims at providing participants with an understanding of advance earth observation data and modellling approaches for monitoring and quantitative assessment of hydro-meteorological hazards, says ISRO. A list of topics that will be covered are as follows:

  • Overview of earth observation data and geospatial techniques.
  • Hydrological modelling and its meteorological hazards assessment.
  • Hydrodynamic modelling and its applications in hydro-meteorological hazards assessment.
  • Drought monitoring and assessment using remote sensing data.
  • Snow and glacier mapping and avalanche vulnerability assessment.

ISRO has further stated that hydro-meteorological events such as Uttarakhand flash floods 2013, Gomukh debris flow event 2017, Rockslide triggered Chamoli flash flood 2020 and snow avalanche of Draupadi ka Danda peak, Uttarakashi 2022 serve as a warning for researchers to utilise earth observation data and process based models to decipher these unfortunate events.

Who Can Take the ISRO Free Online Course?

Although anyone interested can take the course, it would be most relevant and beneficial for participants belonging to the following categories:

  • Professionals from the Central, or state government, and private organizations.
  • NGOs engaged in hydro-meteorological hazards linked regional and national projects.
  • Students and researchers aligned to hydro-meteorological hazard studies.

Those who wish to know more are advised to go through the course brochure for further information.
