ISRO, IIT Bombay and AICTE Invite Registrations for Map Making Competition, Winners to get Certificates

ISRO, IIT Bombay and AICTE will soon begin registrations for a mapathon, which means map making competition. All Indian nationals, either individuals or teams of four participants, can take part in the map making competition that involves producing maps using Indian remote sensing data. The objective of the competition is to understand the potential of Indian remote sensing data and make maps for Indian regions using free open source mapping software (QGIS), says the official website.

Benefits of the mapathon, as per ISRO, IIT Bombay and AICTE, is building capacity in the country in space applications towards making India AatmaNirbharBharat and a Global GIS hub, and to make this an enabler platform for collaborative problem-solving. Winners will be rewarded with certificates and prizes.

Problem Statements for Map Making Competition by ISRO, IIT Bombay and AICTE

According to the official website, the competition aims at using data collected from ISRO platforms to  map India’s resources, agriculture, climate and disaster management, rural and urban planning and in identifying pathways for future development. Participants can choose from the following topics for the mapathon:

  • Mapping of natural resources or man-made features.
  • Change detection based on AWIFS or LISS III datasets.
  • LULC change with hotspots using LULC maps from Bhuvan.
  • Flood maps.
  • State-wise health care indicators maps.
  • Locust infestation, stubble burning, low lying areas or Jhum Cultivation.
  • Road network or drainage maps.
  • Land degradation maps.
  • Health infra, population, age group etc. for vaccination.
  • Detection of change in waterbodies, reservoirs or wetlands.
  • Own topic.
