ISRO Free Online Course Announced, Students Can Apply

ISRO free online course on Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) systems has been announced for students and professionals. The course, called “SAR Data Processing and its Application with Special Emphasis on RISAT-1A/EOS-4”, will be conducted from 10 to 14 April 2023. The course is being offered as radar imaging through Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) systems has expanded the technology of microwave remote sensing in various applications. 

What the ISRO Free Online Course Will Cover?

The course basically aims at covering how geometric corrections can be done using SAR geolocation, geocoding, and orthorectification techniques. Some of the topics that will be covered  are as follows:

• SAR remote sensing concepts: SAR geometry, imaging modes, RISAT-1A/EOS-4 modes, SAR resolution, geometric distortions, and SAR image properties and interpretation.
• SAR data processing-I, and II: SAR data processing concepts, pulse compression technique, synthetic aperture concept, range cell migration (RCM), and range doppler algorithm.
• SAR polarimetry: Basic concepts of SAR polarimetry, polarimetric decompositions, hybrid polarimetry, quad polarimetry, and RISAT-1A polarimetric modes.
• SAR interferometry: Interferogram generation and processing, baseline concepts, across track and along track interferometry configurations.

Who Can Take the ISRO Free Online Course?

Participants who wish to take the course will need to have basic knowledge of remote sensing and digital image processing. In addition to this, the course is open to the following participants:

• Technical or scientific staff of Central or State Governments. 
• Faculty or researchers at universities or institutions.

The candidates who wish to participate in the course should be a graduates or postgraduates. Course study materials like lecture slides, video recorded lectures, open source software and handouts of demonstrations will be made available through IIRS ftp link. 

How to Enroll for the ISRO Free Online Course?

Those who wish to enrol for the course will have to take the following steps:

• A coordinator will have to be identified by the respective organisations.
• Applications will have to be forwarded through coordinators from their respective universities, institutions or centres.
• The identified coordinator will register online their institute as the nodal center on the IIRS website. 
• All the interested participants will then have to register online through registration page by selecting their organization as the nodal center.

Hardware Required to Attend  the ISRO Free Online Course?

Although no hardware or software is required to run the ISRO free online course, and it can be received through e-class platform of IIRS- ISRO using internet connectivity, it is recommended that institutions deploy the following for their participants:

• Desktop computer with web camera microphone and output speakers or laptop with microphone camera and output speaker.
• Large display screen, projector or TV.
