ISRO Announces Free Online Course on Software for Geospatial Technology, Students can Apply

ISRO has invited applications from students and professionals for a five-day free online course on geospatial technology. The course, called “Overview of Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial Technology”, is being offered through the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), a centre of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Upon successfully completing the course, and achieving 70 percent attendance, participants will be given certificates from ISRO.

Who Can Take Part in the ISRO Free Online Course?

The course aims at educating participants on the multiple Free and Open Source Software (FOSS)  that can be used for geographical information systems. The following participants can take part in the course:

  • Student of final year undergraduate course or students from any year of postgraduate course.
  • Technical or scientific staff of central or state government.
  • Faculty or researchers at universities or institutions are also eligible to apply for this course.

What the ISRO Free Online Course Will Cover?

The main goal of this distance learning program is to educate users, researchers, and professionals on the concept of FOSS4G. The course aims to spread knowledge and provide practical applications for using FOSS4G software. Some of the topics that will be covered as part of the course are as follows:

  • FOSS for spatial DBMS.
  • FOSS for Web GIS.
  • FOSS for 3D GIS.

How to Apply for the ISRO Free Online Course?

The last date to apply for the course is 21 April 2023, and interested participants will have to do the following to enrol themselves for the course:

  • The updates and other information about the course are available on the official website
  • The organization, university, department, or institute interested in participating in this course must designate a coordinator.
  • The coordinator will need to register the institute as a nodal center on the IIRS website.
  • All participants must register online through the registration page.
  • During registration, participants should select their organization as the nodal center.
