Excerpts from an interview:

Navigating the Future of Work

How do you foresee the role of GenAI evolving within traditional industries, and what steps should companies take to effectively integrate these technologies while managing change?

Generative AI, as a general-purpose technology, is poised to revolutionize traditional industries by enhancing productivity, particularly for knowledge workers. It offers a significant opportunity to reimagine workflows and optimize tasks that currently consume hours of daily work. At AI and Beyond, it is estimated that leveraging GenAI tools appropriately could save between 30 minutes to two hours of a knowledge worker's day. This efficiency gain is applicable across industries, regardless of the nature of the business.

To integrate GenAI effectively, companies need to start by making their workforce AI-literate. The definition of literacy in the modern workplace is expanding beyond traditional skills like reading, writing, and arithmetic to include proficiency with AI tools.

Conducting AI literacy boot camps and training sessions can help employees understand and use these tools effectively. Furthermore, organizations must focus on fostering a culture that is adaptive to change, ensuring that when generative AI evolves into more autonomous applications like agents or services, the workforce is prepared. Aligning the adoption of technology with the organization's specific challenges and goals ensures that it addresses real problems rather than being a solution looking for a problem.

As an advisor to companies like Mahindra Holidays, how do you tailor technology strategies to meet industry-specific needs, especially in sectors such as travel and hospitality?

Tailoring technology strategies begins with a deep understanding of the specific challenges and aspirations of the industry. For sectors like travel and hospitality, customer experience is a critical area that demands transformation. In today’s AI-driven age, customers expect personalized, anticipatory, and immersive experiences.

AI can help businesses predict customer needs, streamline interactions, and deliver services that exceed expectations.

For instance, in hospitality, AI can redefine touchpoints such as booking, check-in, and personalized recommendations. By leveraging data and analytics, companies can enhance customer engagement and loyalty. As an advisor, the focus remains on aligning technological solutions to these objectives, ensuring they address both short-term challenges and long-term aspirations, such as achieving a competitive edge through superior customer satisfaction.

With your expertise spanning executive roles and consultancy, what differences do you observe between leading digital transformation internally versus advising on it externally?

Leading digital transformation internally often involves a hands-on approach to implementing strategies and navigating the nuances of organizational dynamics. In contrast, an advisory role focuses on strategy formulation and guiding the organization through execution. However, there is a significant overlap between the two, as advisory roles frequently involve working closely with implementation teams.

In both roles, success depends on ensuring that strategies are actionable and aligned with organizational goals. While advising, there is an added emphasis on bringing in the right partners and experts to execute ideas effectively.

This approach allows organizations to leverage external expertise while staying focused on internal objectives. Even in advisory capacities, a quasi-implementation approach ensures that the advisor remains deeply integrated with the process, bridging strategy and execution seamlessly.

Your role as a PCC ICF Coach brings leadership into focus. How important is leadership adaptability in the success of digital transformation initiatives?

Leadership adaptability is fundamental to the success of digital transformation initiatives. The transformation process is not confined to technology adoption; it is deeply rooted in cultural and mindset shifts within the organization. Leaders play a pivotal role in fostering an environment where adaptability, experimentation, and continuous learning are encouraged.

Through coaching, leaders can develop the skills and perspectives needed to guide their teams through change. Building adaptability among leadership involves equipping them to navigate uncertainties, inspire innovation, and align transformation efforts with organizational goals. By cultivating these qualities, leaders ensure that digital transformation is not just a technological shift but a holistic evolution that aligns with the company’s vision.

Given your background in AI, Ethics, and Society, what advice do you have for companies on building ethical frameworks to govern AI deployments?

Advertisment

Companies must recognize that ethical considerations are as important as technological capabilities in AI deployments. Building ethical frameworks should start at the design stage, incorporating principles like fairness, transparency, and accountability into the development process.

While some companies have already established internal ethical guidelines, regulatory frameworks are emerging worldwide, such as the EU’s AI Act, which underscores the need for compliance.

In India, AI ethics is still evolving but will become increasingly critical as regulations are formalized. Organizations should proactively develop governance mechanisms to navigate these requirements effectively. Ethical AI frameworks must ensure that technologies align with societal values, protect user privacy, and mitigate biases. By embedding these principles early, companies can build trust and safeguard their reputation in an era of heightened scrutiny.

From your experience in coaching and advising, what emerging skills should leaders develop to navigate the rapidly changing digital landscape?

Leaders need to embrace new skills that align with the demands of the digital era. First and foremost, AI literacy is essential. Leaders should familiarize themselves with tools like ChatGPT and other AI platforms, understanding how they can enhance productivity and streamline decision-making. Regular exposure to emerging technologies ensures that leaders remain ahead of the curve.

Curiosity is another vital skill, as staying informed and adaptable is crucial in a rapidly evolving landscape.

Leaders must cultivate a mindset of continuous learning, encouraging their teams to explore and experiment with new tools. Additionally, fostering critical thinking and human-centric skills ensures that leaders can balance technological advancements with empathy and ethical considerations.

What are some examples of successful technology implementations or transformations you’ve advised on that could serve as a model for other organizations?

While specific examples cannot be disclosed due to confidentiality, successful projects often involve aligning technological adoption with organizational goals and ensuring cultural readiness for transformation. Key areas of success include blockchain implementations and AI-driven process optimizations.

These projects typically emphasize addressing core business challenges, such as improving efficiency, enhancing customer experience, or gaining a competitive edge. By focusing on the organization’s unique context and ensuring that all stakeholders are aligned, these transformations have provided measurable benefits, serving as models for other organizations embarking on similar journeys.
