With Intels Core 2 range of products having 91% of the market in H1 09, the
company is more focused on deepening its reach in India rather that worrying
about competition. The first half of FY 09 saw Intel launching its Atom
processor, a key in its embedded roadmap. Atom processor, in addition to
powering the sub-notebooks which are sold as netbooks, can be embedded in many
other devices and connected to the Internet, hence hand-held devices, for one,
will benefit hugely. Atom is a sure winner from Intel that will empower the
education verticals as well as users looking at light notebooks.
Meanwhile on the enterprise side, Intels first six-core x86 microprocessor,
to be marketed as Xeon 7400 series, was launched in India. Interestingly, it was
the first microprocessor to be completely designed in India. Codenamed
Dunnington during its development, it is compatible with the Xeon 7300 range,
while delivering one-and-a half times more performance and power savings. The
Intel facility here carried out post-silicon validation to determine
manufacturability and compliance with parameters. This new processor is aimed at
large scale data mining, business intelligence and enterprise resource planning
clients. To promote WiMax, once the spectrum allocation happens in January,
Intel plans to invest in service providers like BSNL, Reliances and Tata.
