The National e-Governance Division, Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) in collaboration with Intel India with support from Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSE&L), Ministry of Human Resource Development have launched a program by the name “Responsible AI for Youth” to promote artificial intelligence amongst school students in India. The program was launched by Ravi Shankar Prasad, Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Communications and Law and Justice.

The aim of the program is to give government school students from classes 8 to 12 in the country a platform and empower them with appropriate new age tech mindset, relevant artificial intelligence skill-sets and democratize AI tool-sets to make them digitally ready for the future. The program has been designed to help students from the government schools pan India to provide them with an opportunity to become part of the skilled workforce in an inclusive manner.

Key Features of the Artificial Intelligence Program by Intel India and Indian Government

  • The National Programme is open to students of classes 8 to 12 from central and state government-run schools (including KVS, NVS, JNV) from all over the country.
  • The AI program will witness a phased implementation and three such phases have been planned.
  • In the first phase, 10 teachers will be nominated by each of the State Education Departments. Teachers may also self nominate themselves by fulfilling the eligibility criteria
  • Online orientation sessions will be organized for these teachers, who will then identify 25 to 50 students.
  • The identified students will attend online training sessions on artificial intelligence and understand how to identify social impact ideas or projects that may be created using AI and submit their ideas through a 60 seconds video explaining a proposed AI-enabled solution.
  • Top 100 ideas will be shortlisted and these students will be invited to attend residential boot camps or online sessions.
  • After the camp or online sessions, students will be asked to submit their final project in a video format on the dedicated website.
  • Top 50 projects will then be shortlisted and asked to be showcased virtually or face-to-face based on the COVID-19 situation.
  • Students will be mentored by Intel certified AI coaches and mentors from phase I to ensure that ideas mature as prototypes.
  • Finally, top 20 innovative projects will be selected by an independent committee of experts and provided opportunities to showcase at a relevant platform.
