Instagram is currently experimenting with a new feature called “Flipside” which offers users an additional layer of privacy for sharing content. This new feature allows individuals to create a secondary photo grid which will be only visible to a designated list of friends. With this users can curate a separate list of friends and choose to post content either to their main grid or the exclusive “Flipside’ represented by a key icon in their grid.

Initially, it was accessible as an internal prototype in December, now “Flipside” has begun to appear for actual users.  Although there are existing tools for selective sharing on Instagram such as the “close friends” feature, but still the “Flipside’ feature introduces a distinct approach.

Instagram Head, Adam Mosseri has acknowledged the repetition of these features, contemplating the decision on whether to launch it officially. However, the challenge of declining user post frequency poses a dilemma for Instagram prompting the exploration of features like ‘Flipside’ to encourage increased user engagement with the platform.

How does the Instagram Flipside feature work?

The flipside feature enables users to create a custom profile, complete with a unique name, bio, and pictures dedicated to sharing exclusive content with a smaller group of followers. This feature addresses the phenomenon of ‘finstas’, or fake Instagram accounts often used by individuals and celebrities to interact with close friends. As Instagram seeks innovative ways to enhance connection and user engagement, Flipside represents a potential solution to make sharing more intimate and selective.

Conclusion

While the official launch remains uncertain, Instagram’s ongoing experimentation demonstrates a commitment to adapting its platform to evolving user preferences and behaviors.

The move aligns with Meta’s strategy to create more private spaces on Instagram amid changing user posting behaviors and a desire for enhanced privacy.
