Apple Hires More

During the the financial year ended September 2009, technology major Apple hired
2,300 full-time employees, taking the total count to 34,300. The total head
count at Apple, including full-time and temporary people and contractors, shot
up to 36,800 for the fiscal year ended September 26, 2009. In the year ended
September 2008, the number stood at 35,100 with 32,000 full-time people and
3,100 temporary employees.

IGNOU Exam Collapse

Following the collapse of its online entrance exam for engineering programs, the
Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has sought explanation from the
service provider Yahoo!, as to what went wrong leading to the crash. Following
the crash, IGNOU, which offers distance education to over 18 lakh students, had
failed to conduct online entrance examination. About 9,350 students were
supposed to appear in the admission test for diploma and degree courses in
engineering under IGNOU.

Is the Web Running out of Addresses?

The European Commission recently said that businesses urgently need to upgrade
to IPv6, a new version of the Internets addressing protocol that would increase
the number of available addresses. A survey by the commission found that few
organizations across Europe are prepared for the switch from the current naming
protocol, Ipv4, to IPv6, the new version of the Internets addressing protocol.
Of the 610 government, educational and other industry organizations surveyed
throughout Europe, the Middle East and central Asia, only 17% had upgraded to
IPv6.

Orkut Gets a New Look

Search giant, Google, has revamped its social networking site Orkut on Friday,
with a new look and a host of new features. Built entirely on the more efficient
Google Web Toolkit, the new-look Orkut is reported to be faster and easy to use.
Besides a new look, it also allows faster uploading of photos and has features
like video chat, automatic face detection and a scroll down menu for viewing all
friends on the same page.

Educomp Adds 671 Schools Under ICT

Educomp, a provider of IT services, has announced that its ICT division,
Edureach, has added 671 government schools to its existing portfolio of 13,792
schools under ICT implementation across India. Edureach has bagged contracts
from the governments of Assam, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Tripura and the combined
order worth is over Rs 77 crore. Edureach will reach an additional 3.5 lakh
students across these 671 schools. With the current project, the total number of
schools under ICT implementation by Educomp across India stands at 14,463.

TOSEA, BOE Sign Pact

The Taiwan Optoelectronic and Semiconductors Equipment Association (TOSEA) and
BOE Technology have signed a letter of intent (LoI) which will enable BOE
Technology to get priority regarding equipment sourced from Taiwan for its 8.5G
LCD factory. According to the LoI, BOE Technology will be given the priority
when the terms of supply offered by members of the TOSEA and their competitors
are comparable.
