The Government of India has rolled out India's first Cyber Security Policy. This is a landmark step since the country is facing continuous challenges to safeguard national assets from cyber attacks. Although the details of the policy are to made public, it seeks to provide for protection of citizen's information. The draft of the national cyber security policy was proposed in 2011.
It is believed that the new policy will further strengthen the Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) to periodically audit, defend and spread awareness on cyber security besides encouraging open standards.
It is a long-awaited step, since the need for such a policy is quite evident. On global index India stands low as far as cyber security is concerned. The recent revelation that the US was spying on Indian citizen data on the social network makes the policy a significant step. Besides, a recent study reveals that India has the 3rd highest number of victims of phishing attacks. Hence the policy is critical in India's attempt to safeguard national assets and citizen privacy from external attacks.
