India PC sales grew by 16% in FY12:MAIT

As compared to the previous year sales,PC grew by 16 per cent, according to Manufacturers' Association for Information Technology(MAIT) on Tuesday. The industry sold 10.8 million units of PCs as compared to 9.3 million in 2010-11.

It had forecast 11.8 million sales of PCs between April 2011 and March 2012 last year.

However, MAIT also signalled on poor purchases of PC from all segments - Business, Households and Government, which led to total sales of personal computers in India dropping to 10.8 million in 2011-12.

"The industry experienced very nervous business environment in 2011-12. The year has been plagued by many problems like hard disk shortage and inflation accompanied with rupee devaluation," Alok Bhardwaj, President, MAIT, said.

MAIT also projects the industry to grow in the current year (2012-13) after measuring all economic sentiments to 12.4 million units of PCs, he said. Desktop sales grows by 11% and Notebook by 26%.

According to MAIT, SEC 'C' Households saw traction and and grow to 45%.

" The bright point in the last year PC market saw the surge in PC penetration in the SEC 'C' Households, with an impressive growth. It constituted 35% of the Industry. The trend of households emerging as growth drivers of the industry continues. It accounted for 55% of PC market,' explains Dr Bhardwaj,MAIT.
