India Under Lockdown for 21 Days: Here is a List of Services That will be Allowed

While India observes a lockdown for 21 days, here is a list of services that will be allowed to ensure citizens of the country are not troubled

The ultimate measure to break the Coronavirus proliferation chain has been taken by India too after Italy, the United States, Europe and others. India will observe a strict lockdown for 21 days starting midnight of 24 March 2020. Although this means that individuals have to strictly stay at home for the said time, certain services will still be allowed so that citizens are not inconvenienced.

The announcement, which was made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, may have caused a certain sense of panic amongst public who are wondering if essentials such as milk and food will be available to them. “My fellow citizens, THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO NEED TO PANIC. Essential commodities, medicines, etc. would be available. Centre and various state governments will work in close coordination to ensure this. Together, we will fight COVID-19 and create a healthier India. Jai Hind!” says Narendra Modi.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has just issued a circular on the list of essential services that will be available during the period of lockdown. “Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has issued an Order dated 24.03.2020 under Section 10(2)(l) of the Disaster Management Act, directing the Ministries/ Departments of Government of India, State/Union Territory Governments and State/ Union Territory Authorities to take effective measures for ensuring social distancing so as to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the country. The Order shall remain in force, in all parts of the country, for a period of 21 days with effect from 25.03.2020,” says a release from the Government.

Services Allowed While India is Under Lockdown for 21 Days

  1. Ration shops, food delivery, groceries, milk booth, fruits and vegetables, fish and meat will be allowed to function. However, authorities may encourage and facilitate home delivery to make sure that there is no crowding.
  2. Banks, insurance offices and ATMs will function.
  3. Print and electronic media will function.
  4. Telecommunications, internet services, broadcasting and cable services will be allowed. IT and IT-enabled services for only essential services will be allowed. However, individuals must work from home as far as possible.
  5. Delivery of all essential items including food, pharmaceuticals, and medical equipment through ecommerce will be allowed.
  6. Petrol pumps, LPG, petroleum and gas retail and storage outlets will be allowed.
  7. Power generation, transmission, and distribution units and services will be allowed.
  8. Capital and debt market services as notified by the Securities and Exchange Board of India to be allowed.
  9. Cold storage and warehousing services to be allowed.
  10. Private security services to be allowed.
