Several users have taken to social media to request the Ministry of Finance to extend the income tax return filing date. The last date to file the returns is 31 July 2022. However, those commenting on social media say that the date should be extended further as there have been delays in obtaining their Form 16s.

A user by the name Dr Pawan Jaiswal says that the last date should be extended for the following reasons:

1. Increased taxpayer base.

2. TDS reflects after 15 June.

3. Late updatation of AIS/TIS.

4. Increased cap for non-audit (1 crore to 10 crores).

5. Other statutory compliance dates.

6. Precision while filing is a must.

“More than 2.5 Crore ITRs are pending for filing. 50 Lakhs ITR per day is required for next 5 days. Quality is being compromised in the game of numbers,” says CA Keshav Garg on Twitter.

“Please extend salaried individuals ITR filing due date. It has become hectic, pressurised, and resulted in physical health issues when F16 is only get issued on 15 June. Furthermore, there are everyday changes in F26AS, matching lengthy AIS and TIS, foreign income and credits,” says Mitesh.

However, the Income Tax department has hinted that the last date may not be extended. “More than 3 crore ITRs for AY 2022-23 have been filed on e-Filing portal till 25 July 2022. The due date to file ITR for AY 2022-23 is 31 July 2022. We urge you to file your ITR at the earliest, if not filed as yet. File Now,” says an official tweet from the tax department.  Users who are facing issues may also write to the tax portal and submit their details along with their PAN and mobile number at orm@cpc.incometax.gov.in.
