IIT Madras has maintained its position as a leader in Indian higher education, maintaining its reign at the top of the NIRF rankings since the inception of the rankings in 2016. The institute's excellence in the "Research Institutions" category was recognized with a second-place ranking, maintaining its position from last year. Additionally, IIT Madras secured the second position in the "Innovations" category, previously known as the Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements.

Expressing his congratulations to all the participating institutes in NIRF 2023, Dr. Rajkumar Ranjan Singh emphasized the significance of the rankings in assisting students in their selection process and aiding institutions in identifying areas for improvement in teaching, research, resources, and other aspects. The rankings have fostered a culture of data organization and promotion of healthy competition among participating institutes.

Dr. Rajkumar Ranjan Singh acknowledged the exceptional performance of institutes such as IITs, IIMs, NITs, and IIITs, and also highlighted the positive evolution of private universities indicated by the rankings. He encouraged institutes to strive for excellence in future editions of the NIRF rankings.

The awards were received by Prof V Kamakoti, director of IIT Madras, at a ceremony held in New Delhi. Prof Kamakoti acknowledged the collective efforts of the students, faculty, and non-teaching staff that contributed to the institute's extraordinary performance. He expressed pride in IIT Madras' progress towards becoming a global leader in research and education, reaffirming the institute's commitment to its strategic plan.

The NIRF rankings, established in 2015, employ a comprehensive methodology to evaluate and rank educational institutions across India based on various parameters such as teaching, research, graduation outcomes, outreach, and perception.
