IIT Madras has announced that the pre-placement offers (PPO) for its students have witnessed a rise this year, when compared to last year despite the pandemic situation. The Indian Institute of Madras has attributed this rise in offers to its internship programme, which was conducted completely online this year for the first time in its history to overcome restrictions on account of the COVID-19 pandemic.
This year, IIT Madras students have reportedly received 182 pre-placement offers when compared to the 170 offers last year. The first phase of the campus placements has commenced from 1 December 2020. The institute added that the internships, facilitated through an institute- coordinated process, enabled students to intern with companies that are large recruiters, which resulted in an increase in PPOs due to the excellent performance of students during the internships.

IIT Madras says that the following companies provided its students the highest PPOs
- Texas Instruments made 12 offers
- Microsoft made 12 offers
- Qualcomm made 10 offers
- Goldman Sachs made 9 offers, and
- American Express made 9 offers
The major sectors that offered PPOs during 2020-21 are as follows:
Core and R&D: 29 percent
Analytics, Consulting and Finance: 19 percent
FMCG (Fast-Moving Consumer Goods): 6 percent
Information Technology: 46 percent
Prof NV Ravi Kumar, advisor (Internships), IIT Madras, said: "We have been observing a direct correlation between internships and Pre-Placement Offers ever since the internship office was created. Internships provide an excellent opportunity for students to understand the working culture and expectations of the companies that they work for and for the companies to realize the potential of our students during that short period. When interests and expectations of interns and companies match, it culminates in Pre-Placements offers."
