IIT Madras Launches Online BSc Degree in Data Science for Students

IIT Madras has launched a new flexible online offering in data science that can be taken by students and professionals from across India

IIT Madras, a premier institute in India that has secured the first place in NIRF rankings, has launched a new and unique online BSc degree in data science for students across the country. The program was launched by Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, Minister of Human Resource and Development, Government of India. The degree can be taken by anybody who is interested right from classes 12 to working professionals.

“IIT Madras is pioneering a completely online program to produce graduates who will be employable in the sector that presently has high demand – Programming and Data Science. The program uses an innovative combination of online learning and in-person assessment and is flexible and affordable. I believe the program will be a gamechanger in the field of education in India in the coming years and inspire other top-ranking institutions to launch many such online initiatives,” said Professor Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director, IIT Madras.

Data science is becoming an imperative skill across various sectors and hence there are various job opportunities in the field. “Our program, therefore, aims to create a thoroughly trained programmer, proficient in application development, data sciences and machine learning,” says IIT Madras.

All You Need to Know about the IIT Madras Data Science Degree

There are three levels in the IIT Madras Data Science degree namely foundational, diploma and degree levels. Learners have the option to exit at any level. Students who have completed the twelfth standard can opt for the foundational level course and can choose to exit the course with certificates from Centre for Continuing Education (CCE) IIT Madras in 1 to 2 years.

Working professionals can opt for diploma courses with certificates from IIT Madras in 1 to 4 years. Learners can also opt for a BSc with a diploma in data science in 1 to 6 years. Before progressing to the next level, the learner has to clear all the courses at the current level.

A learner has to clear all foundational level courses successfully, before registering for any diploma level courses. Similarly, learners have to clear diploma level courses successfully before registering for any degree level courses, says IIT Madras.
