IIT Madras and IBM Invite Applications for Free Online Course on Quantum Computing

IIT Madras and IBM have offered a free online course on quantum computing on the NPTEL platform that can be completed in 4 weeks

IIT Madras has invited applications for a free online course on quantum computing on the NPTEL platform. The 4-week long course, called “Introduction to Quantum Computing: Quantum Algorithms and Qiskit”, is being offered in partnership with IBM Research and IBM Systems. Recently, IIT Madras had announced a collaboration with IBM on quantum computing education and research. The course is open to students, researchers and faculty from computer science and physics, mathematics and chemistry departments.

The course will be conducted by Dr Prabha Mandayam who is an assistant professor at IIT Madras and has a PhD in quantum computing, Dr Anupama Ray who is an advisory research scientist, IBM Quantum Ambassador and Qiskit Advocate, IBM Research and has a PhD in deep learning, and Dr Sheshashayee Raghunathan who is a senior engineer at IBM Quantum Ambassador and Qiskit Advocate and has a PhD in Quantum Computing.

What the IIT Madras and IBM Free Online Course on Quantum Computing Will Cover?

The course will introduce participants to Quantum Computation, starting with basic concepts such as superposition and entanglement, to discussing the quantum circuit model of computation and basic Quantum algorithms that demonstrate the power of computing with quantum bits. Participants will also be given an understanding of the idea of quantum error correction to mitigate the effects of noise in today’s quantum devices. Some of the topics that will be covered are as follows:

  • Introduction and IBM quantum perspective, Q mission in India: Invited talk, quantum computing applications, and quantum computing basics.
  • IBM quantum composer and quantum lab using Qiskit.
  • Quantum algorithms-I (Oracles, Deustch Jozsa), Quantum Algorithms-II (Grover’s Algorithm with Hands-on).
  • Quantum error correction: Invited Talk, NISQ era Quantum Algorithms (VQE/QAOA and industrial applications).

Furthermore, will be a full hands-on session for each concept taught using Qiskit, a pythonic way of programming and the IBM Circuit Composer.

How to Enroll for the IIT Madras and IBM Free Online Course on Quantum Computing

Interested participants will have to enroll on the NPTEL platform by clicking on the Join button on the official page using their Google, Facebook, Microsoft, or SWAYAM accounts. The course will be conducted from 23 August to 17 September 2021, and the last date to enroll is 23 August 2021. Participants who wish to receive the certificate for the course will have to pay Rs 1000 and take an examination to be conducted on 23 October 2021.
