IIT Madras Announces New BS Program in Medical Sciences and Engineering

IIT Madras has announced a new four-year BS program in medical sciences and engineering. The degree is being offered through the institute’s newly launched Department of Medical Sciences and Technology, which aims at integrating medical education and engineering to introduce innovative practices into clinical settings. The course, according to IIT Madras, offers an interdisciplinary approach to prepare students for designing life-saving medical devices, drug discovery, artificial intelligence in medicine, and fundamental medical research.

What the IIT Madras BS Program in Medical Sciences and Engineering Will Cover?

Participants who take the course will get to do an internship at a hospital so that they can correlate their theoretical concepts with practicals. The course will be taught by both medical and engineering faculty to give students a strong research base. Some of the topics that will be covered as part of the course are as follows:

  • Basic engineering principles that are necessary to understand physiology.
  • Fundamental sciences to understand physiology.
  • Basics of mathematical methods, machine learning, and medical imaging to build mathematical structure.
  • Application of these fundamentals to the functioning of physiological systems.
  • Hierarchical Structure of the human body. 
  • Mathematical foundations for MS.

The department will train physicians to effectively apply technology in their clinical practice and lay the foundation for physician-scientists training in India. Additionally, the department will conduct both fundamental and applied research programs that connect various medical disciplines.

How to Enroll for the IIT Madras BS Program in Medical Sciences and Engineering?

Interested participants will have to apply for the IISER Aptitude Test (IAT) on the IISER admission portal. In addition to this, application forms will also have to be filled up on the IIT Madras admission portal, and applications will be accepted from 15 May 2023 onwards.
