IIT Kharagpur Offers Free Online Course on Deep Learning for Engineers through NPTEL

IIT Kharagpur is at present accepting enrollments for several free online courses on the NPTEL platform. One such course which can be beneficial for electronics and communication engineers, computer science engineers, and electrical engineers is Deep learning. The course will introduce learners with traditional machine learning approaches such as Bayesian Classification and Multilayer Perceptron among other things.

The course will be conducted by IIT Kharagpur professor Dr Prabir Kr. Biswas who has completed his BTech (Hons), MTech and PhD from the department of electronics and electrical communication engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. He is also a senior member of IEEE and was the chairman of the IEEE Kharagpur Section, 2008.

What the IIT Kharagpur Course on Deep Learning Comprises Of?

As mentioned before, the course will begin with traditional machine learning approaches and then move to modern deep learning architectures like Convolutional Neural Networks, Autoencoders, and so on. It would be helpful for students to have a knowledge of Linear Algebra, DSP, and PDE. The NPTEL website says that on completion of the course learners will be equipped with the knowledge of applying deep learning techniques to solve several real life problems.

The course structure, which will be conducted over a period of 12 weeks, is as follows: introduction to deep learning, Bayesian learning, decision surfaces, linear classifiers, linear machines with hinge loss, optimization techniques, gradient descent, batch optimization, introduction to neural network, multilayer perceptron, back propagation learning, unsupervised learning with deep network, autoencoders, convolutional neural network, building blocks of CNN, transfer learning, etc.

Important Dates to Remember

The course will be conducted from 20 July 2020 to 9 October 2020, the students who wish to take the deep learning course would be required to apply before 27 July. To obtain the e-certificate with IIT Kharagpur and NPTEL logos, students will need to pay a sum of RS 1000 and take an examination on 17 October 2020.
