IIT Kanpur Invites Applications for Two Free Online Courses on Data Science

IIT Kanpur is offering two new free online courses on Data Science With R Software on the NPTEL platform for interested participants

IIT Kanpur has invited applications for two new free online courses on data science on the NPTEL platform. The course is being offered in two parts namely Data Science With R Software 1: Probability And Statistical Inference, and Data Science With R Software 2: Sampling Theory And Linear Regression Analysis. Both courses will be available for a period of twelve weeks, and it is advised that interested students take the first part of the course before moving on to the second.

The course will be conducted by Dr Shalabh who is a professor of statistics at IIT Kanpur. The professor has been actively involved in developing several web based and MOOC courses in NPTEL including on regression analysis and has conducted several workshops on statistics for teachers, researchers and practitioners. The professor has authored over 75 research papers in national and international journals. 

What the IIT Kanpur Free Online Courses on Data Science Will Cover?

The course basically aims at imparting students with the knowledge to apply data analysis with aid of statistics. The topics, IIT Kapur says, have enormous applicability in data science and are to be learnt from data based computational perspectives through software. Some of the topics that will be covered as part of the course are as follows:

• Introduction to data science, basic calculations with R Software and probability theory.
• Probability theory and random variables.
• Random variables and discrete probability distributions.
• Continuous probability distributions.
• Introduction to data science and calculations with R software.
• Basic fundamentals of sampling.
• Simple random sampling.
• Introduction to linear models and regression and simple linear regression analysis
• Simple linear regression analysis with R.
• Multiple linear regression analysis.

Who Can Take the IIT Kanpur Free Online Courses on Data Science?

The course can be taken up by candidates with a mathematics background up to class 12. Furthermore, it would be desirable for candidates to have a minor statistics background, says IIT Kanpur. The course would be most suited for:
