IIT Kanpur becomes one of the first institutes in the country to offer a specialised MTech program in 'Unmanned Aerial Systems’. Abhay Karandikar, director, IIT Kanpur shared this new de on his personal social media handles on Twitter and LinkedIN. The course will be offered through the Department of Aerospace Engineering of the Indian Institute of Kanpur. “I am delighted to share that IIT Kanpur will be one of the first institutes in India to offer a dedicated MTech program in 'Unmanned Aerial Systems' by the Department of Aerospace Engineering,” said Karandikar.
The program will be made available to interested students from the academic year 2023, and has been approved by the Senate and Board of the institute. “This initiative was made possible by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) nationwide program on capacity building for drone technology, which promotes interdisciplinary collaboration across various academic institutions and training centers,” added Karandikar.
About the IIT Kanpur 2-Year MTech Program is Unmanned Aerial Systems
While more information is awaited on the course, Karandikar has stated that it will be a two year program that will require students to complete 150 credits of coursework and thesis research work. Students will be given the option to specialise in the following two domains:
- Design and Aeromechanics of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV).
- Autonomy of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV).
“This initiative was made possible by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) nationwide program on capacity building for drone technology, which promotes interdisciplinary collaboration across various academic institutions and training centers,” said the IIT Kanpur director while adding that the Government of Uttar Pradesh was also supporting the Centre of Excellence in Drone at IIT Kanpur.
Candidates who wish to gain admission into this MTech program will need to have a valid Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering score as students will be admitted into the course on the basis on the marks gained in their GATE exam. "This unique program reinforces IIT Kanpur's role in helping India become a leader in UAV/Drone technology. The Government of Uttar Pradesh is also supporting the Centre of Excellence in Drone at IIT Kanpur," states Karandikar.
