IIT Delhi has launched a new School of Artificial Intelligence (ScAI) on its campus, which will begin to offer PhD in Artificial Intelligence from the next admission cycle starting in January 2021. Furthermore, a postgraduate degree in artificial intelligence and related courses are also being planned, said a statement from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi.
The School of Artificial Intelligence will work on a flexible faculty model, which means it will have core faculty, joint faculty and adjunct faculty members who may also be from the industry. Prof Mausam, School of Artificial Intelligence’s Founding Head said that they were also exploring external partnerships to help shape the school of AI into a world-class entity.
Prof V Ramgopal Rao, Director, IIT Delhi, said that a dedicated program in artificial intelligence is needed because while there is a strong demand all over the world for skilled AI professionals, current degrees are broad-based, and do not make it easy for students to learn the depths of different subfields within AI.
Main Objectives of IIT Delhi School of Artificial Intelligence
IIT Delhi says that the School of AI aims at fulfilling the following main objectives:
- To bring together faculty members of IIT Delhi who are individually invested in various aspects of the field.
- To make IIT Delhi a one-stop center for industry or government interested in collaborating or funding AI innovations.
- To provide a platform for industry, government, and civil society entities to share their domain problems.
- To introduce various educational programmes related to artificial intelligence.
ScAI, which is the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi’s 6th school, will be broad in its research trajectories, and multi-disciplinary in its academic pursuits.
