IIT Bhubaneswar Introduces New Online Examination System: Here’s How it Works

As the Coronavirus pandemic has made it difficult for organizations to hold examinations in the present time, IIT Bhubaneswar has created a new method of holding the online examinations. As of now, the new mechanism to hold online examinations introduced by the institute can be used for holding all types of examinations including the class tests and end-semester examination of an institute. The method uses the currently available commercial systems like the ‘Wheebox’ as a part of its mechanism.

How the New Mechanism of Online Examinations Created by IIT Bhubaneswar Works

The online examination system proposed by IIT Bhubaneswar can be used for computer-based tests as well as more detailed conventional exams with essay type questions. The online examination system consists of the following aspects:

1. There is a virtual examination hall wherein all examinees are visible.
2. Invigilators can monitor the activities of exam giving students in real-time.
3. The examination question paper can be distributed to students online, and all at once.
4. Students can submit the soft copies of their exam papers online, which will be received and can also be printed if needed.
5. The system uses two or more network connections for the reliability of the connection and additional facility for proctoring for reliable invigilation.
6. Students need not travel to any center to give the computer-based test and can give the exam from their home or any other location.
7. Students can take the examination through laptops or other available gadgets as long as they have a reliable network connection.

“The institute successfully tested the entire system by holding a mock test on 9th may 2020 involving about 240 students stationed across the country, question papers of 31 subjects and 20 invigilators. It was found that the tests can be held successfully and effectively as long a student has at least one of the two connections working at any time during the examination,” said professor RV Raja Kumar, Director, IIT Bhubaneswar.
