How Yes Bank plans to use 'Facebook at Work' for better employee engagement

Facebook has made an official entry into the Indian banking enterprise. Yes Bank has recently launched Facebook at Work for its 15000 plus employees. It’s the first banking organization in India to adopt the enterprise version of the social networking platform in India.

The private bank boasts of a young workforce with an average age group of 31 years and the adoption of Facebook as a communication platform echoes the urgent need of today’s enterprises to look for innovative ways of collaboration and employee engagement that are in line with the expectations of the new age workforce. “Facebook at work is a natural extension of the Social Media platforms used by Gen X who leverage technology extensively for connecting, sharing and collaborating in this VUCA world,” comments, Deodutta Kurane, Group President, Human Capital Management, Yes Bank.

The familiarity element associated with Facebook gives its enterprise version an edge over other enterprise networking platforms, as in terms of the user interface and features it is pretty much similar to the widely popular networking site. Facebook at Work also comes with features like profiles, news feeds, messages, events and groups.

Yes Bank sees great value in using the platform as an engagement and collaborative tool for its employees. For the expanding bank, it will serve as an important platform complimenting its traditional communication channels. “While emails will continue to be used for communicating confidential and sensitive information & data, Facebook at Work can be leveraged for more collaborative communication such as sharing ideas, best practices, organizing discussion forums, and giving instant feedback,“ adds, Kurane.

Experts suggest that Facebook at work should turn out to be a more effective medium for employee engagement as it offers new age employees a fast, seamless and non-intrusive way to interact and share ideas. Also, for organizations that are spread across geographies, it presents an attractive alternate communication channel along with traditional mediums.

“For new age banking organizations, digital engagement via FB@Work can play a critical role in catalyzing the workforce expeditiously compared to traditional modes of engagement.”

Facebook at work is an interesting idea that if implemented well can drive faster and effective communication across enterprises. Yet companies adopting the social networking platform will have to educate users on extracting its true potential to support business objectives. “Building employee awareness about the benefits of using Facebook at Work as a more transparent, engaging & interactive communication tool vis-à-vis formal internal communication mails is also equally crucial.”

As is the case with any new technology, Banking enterprises as well as other organizations that handle critical information will also have to consider the security part in implementing Facebook at work. “The challenge lies in positioning Facebook at Work appropriately as a highly secure digital engagement platform, with relevant checks and filters in place,” opines Kurane.
