Commworks to hire 100 more 



Commworks Corporation, a wholly-owned subsidiary of 3Com Corporation, is setting up a technology center in Bangalore, which will be operational by February 2003. The center, which will be a hub for the Asia-Pacific region, is expected to recruit 100 engineers. 3Com has roped in Mascon Global to set up infrastructure and manage the center.

Home away from home at HCL



HCL Infosystems, with a workforce of about 3,400, has recently taken up several HR initiatives, including adoption of a 360-degree appraisal system. The company has built ‘HCL Towers’, a Rs 20-crore residential complex comprising 32 flats under the HCL housing society, which has members from HCL Infosys, HCL Tech and HPS. 

PCMM Level 5 for Wipro Tech



Wipro Technologies has got the distinction of being one of few companies to win the Level 5 of the People Capability Maturity Model (PCMM). It is also the only company to be assessed at Level 5 under SEI-CMM and PCMM process, as certified in the United States. The PCMM model is under the Software Engineering Institute–Carnegie Melon University’s certification process.

Global M&As down from 2000



The year 2001 saw a decrease in value of global mergers and acquisitions (M&As) to $ 1.6 trillion, half of what it was in the year 2000. The major reason for this dip is the inflated value of IT shares in 2000.

The truth about job interviews



Two-thirds of Indian job seekers lie during interviews in an effort to improve their employment opportunities, a research conducted by online career site Monsterindia.com revealed. The study reveals that only 33% of Indians respond honestly to interview questions. The survey further illustrates that 36% of respondents admit to lying about the reasons for leaving a previous job, 24% lie about their current salary, and 7% lie when asked about their current responsibilities.

Mauritius President Cassam Uteem has sought Indian expertise in developing the Information Technology sector in Mauritius. During his two-day visit to Bangalore, Uteem said Mauritius considered India to be its strategic partner in the development of the IT sector.

Hewitt bullish on IT demand



Hewitt Associates' principal Alan Parker has predicted that the demand for IT professionals will pick up in the next few months. “We were predicting a huge shortage in the availability of trained and talented IT professionals but now the demand has stalled and the companies have got some breathing spac,” he said while providing a human resource manager’s perspective of how the global recession and September 11 have changed the IT scene. 

50% MNCs lay off employees 



As per a study, half of the multinational companies have laid off staff and 46% out-sourced their non-core functions to meet the current slowdown. “Companies are not taking knee-jerk actions to respond to current economic pressure. They are making strategic decisions, keeping their R&D Programs intact, for example, while making long-term adjustments to the sizes of their work forces and outsourcing non-core functions,” the study said, quoting Samuel A Dipiazza, junior global CEO of
PricewaterhouseCoopers.
