When Haihui became the first Chinese company to achieve the CMM Level 5 certification, it added another feather in the cap of the Indian IT industry that already boasts of the maximum number of CMM-certified entities. Confused? Read on to find out how. It is quite a feat because this is the first time that an Indian company has been instrumental in helping a Chinese company achieve this certification. And the company to do so is Keane India. “This achievement also assumes significance in light of the fact that the Chinese government is aggressively promoting certification of its software companies and has sought the help of Indian companies in this effort,” said Keane India managing director Parmindar S Miglani. That it has also opened doors of a new kind for many an Indian company is yet another story.

While Chinese hardware has made an impact in the global market, its software companies have not been able to make a significant mark in the global market, except perhaps a nominal presence in the Asian market. China wants to tap the software potential in the US market by adhering to CMM norms, which is largely acknowledged by American companies. No wonder then, Keane India sees a tremendous business potential and thinks it can actively help Chinese companies put quality processes in place. The company had tied up with GST in 2002 to foray into the Chinese market. GST is the certifying agency while Keane will be working with customers as a quality consultant.

Another initiative that Keane India has undertaken is to go in for CMMi Level 5 certification. This means that the company will imbibe the best practices of its operations in the US, Canada and India, and formalize them into processes across the organization. The company has also been helping its parent company in the US upgrade its customers to CMM Level 3 at no additional cost.
