Technology plays a significant role in improving capability and efficiency of city services. Technology solutions, such as the following examples, can be implemented in a small time frame to quickly improve city services.

The key highlights are as follows:

· By 2020, 20% of Indian smart city initiatives will introduce IoT-enabled smart city solutions to resolve or mitigate transportation-related urban issues.

· No single smart city business model will dominate the smart city marketplace, as India's smart city marketplace is highly fragmented.

· The Ministry of Urban Development's investments in the intelligent transport management system and digital surveillance system, as well as waste and water management, are key areas for public-private partnerships.

· The lack of professionals and skills to administer the smart city is hampering the scale of deployment and utilization of smart services.

Recommendations - Strategic planners of smart city solution providers should:

· Form an ecosystem by partnering with key solution providers. Continually review partnering strategies and adjust business models to successfully balance project investments and profit margins

· Focus product development efforts around the key services that the government plans to enable in smart cities

· Plan for the long haul. Smart city projects entail lengthy pilot projects and coordinated development with government agencies

· Provide a project framework for smart city initiatives that includes metrics for citizen impact and benefits that go beyond technology, infrastructure and service. Collaborate with local vertical solution providers to address contextualized requirements of city customers in the most scalable and cost-effective way.
