Electronics Systems Punjab Ltd’s (ESPL) success belied the myth about the inability of public sector units to function efficiently and innovatively. With a productivity figure ranking the highest within the industry, the company succeeded in capturing highly specialized markets like that of data acquisition and control systems.A wholly-owned subsidiary of Punjab State Industrial Development Corp and incorporated in 1980, ESPL was engaged in the manufacture of computers, data acquisition and control systems and agro-dairy instruments. Its many firsts include minis with Unix-based 68010/68020 processors, VME Bus-based minis, data acquisition systems and high-speed modems. The company’s enviable client list boasted of names like BHEL, Indian Air Force and Punjab National Bank.In 1989, the company, in conjunction with ET&T, introduced its ‘people computer’ scheme which despite all the hype failed to make much impact in the market. Instead it helped set off a chain reaction with every other manufacturer jumping on to the low-PC bandwagon. Major drawbacks of the company include its over-dependence on government agencies, public sector organizations and also its inability to penetrate the private sector despite having a product and support services portfolio rated to be the best qualitatively in the industry.
